Hand, (Billings) Learned
(27 ene. 1872, Albany, N.Y., EE.UU.–18 ago. 1961, Nueva York, N.Y.).

Jurista estadounidense. Asistió a la Universidad de Harvard, donde estudió filosofía (con William James, Josiah Royce y George Santayana) y derecho; más tarde ejerció la profesión de abogado en Albany y Nueva York. En 1909 fue designado juez de distrito federal, y en 1924 fue ascendido a juez de la Corte de Apelaciones del sistema federal y se convirtió en su presidente en 1939. Integró el tribunal en muchas ocasiones después de su retiro oficial en 1951. Su permanencia de 52 años en la magistratura federal no tiene precedentes (desde 1909 hasta su muerte en 1961). Muchos de sus fallos, especialmente en el juicio antimonopolios conocido como el caso Alcoa (1945) y en un caso de 1950 que entrañaba cargos de conspiración comunista, se consideran hitos. Aunque nunca alcanzó la Corte Suprema de los Estados Unidos de América, su reputación sobrepasa la de casi todos los que han formado parte de dicho tribunal.
